District 10 Weekly Update: January 19, 2023

Judah Holstein Reports

I am Judah Holstein, your new Westchester County Legislator, and this is my electronic newsletter where I will share information with you about events, announcements, and issues that come up in the County and in our District. While many of you know a bit about me already, I thought I would offer a brief introduction and share some information about plans and priorities.

I was raised in the Bonnie Crest neighborhood of New Rochelle. My wife, Jackie, who was born in New Rochelle, was raised in the Waverly Heights neighborhood of Eastchester, where we have lived and raised our family. My commitment to public service leadership began with PTAs, both locally and regionally, and eventually led to my election to Eastchester School Board in 2013, where I served until this past July.

During that time, I established a reputation for listening to community members and helping everyone see alternative perspectives and understand decision-making factors.

In an effort to continue to build on that as County Legislator, I am planning a series of "Coffee and Conversation" meetings throughout the District. This will give you the opportunity to share your concerns and ideas with me, and to hear what I am working on for you. We'll be releasing a schedule for those events in the coming days, and I hope you will help me make sure I am doing my best to represent you by attending one or more of these sessions.

Also in line with listening and responding to the community, one initiative I hope to implement involves improvements to reporting and issue-tracking for residents - hate incidents, sewer and flooding issues, housing concerns, and other requests. As Chair of the newly formed Information Technology and Cybersecurity Committee, my hope is that this system will provide clear communication and transparency between the County and constituents, and will also provide data that we can use to prioritize future initiatives and legislation. This is just a first step toward identifying, prioritizing, and addressing your needs, but may help shape the future for my term and beyond.

I have other initiatives that I would love to share with you, but I don't want to turn my e-Newsletter into an e-Book. So stay tuned for upcoming e-Newsletters where I will discuss other things I hope to do for our community, and some personal stories that may help you understand how I have shaped some of my priorities.

For now, please know that I am excited at the opportunity to serve you, and am eager to hear from you - both how I can help and how I am doing.

With warm regards and high hopes for an outstanding 2024,

Judah Holstein
County Legislator District 10

Queridos amigos y vecinos,

District 10 Update: September 13, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This week, I attended the NYSAC conference, where my colleague Ben Boykin was installed as president. One session, "Conflict to Conversation: Must Disagreement Be Disagreeable?" left a lasting impression on me. The speaker made a powerful point: "There is no freedom of speech without a concurrent need to listen." As a country, we pride ourselves on free expression, but true progress begins when we listen. If no one is listening, our words lose value, and we go unheard and unresolved. Upon returning, I was deeply moved by the story of a front-line survivor from the October 7 tragedy, whose experience of trying to save others while fearing for her own life reminded me in some ways of the countless stories of heroism from 9/11. As I then commemorated 9/11 in Eastchester, New Rochelle, and at the Kensico Dam, I realized that our younge...

District 10 Update: August 29, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This past weekend, I brought my youngest son back to SUNY Stony Brook University to begin his sophomore year. Like many parents, I felt the bittersweet mix of love and pride as he left the nest to venture into adulthood. This year, however, I found myself reflecting on the end of his last semester. While our son was fortunate enough not to be significantly impacted by the small but loud protests that took place at his school, some parents were not so lucky, as college students from District 10, Westchester County, and around the world were harassed, intimidated, or blocked from accessing their dorms, classrooms, and other school buildings due to disruptive actions by protestors. I deeply cherish our Constitutional First Amendment and the rights it provides for people to peacefully assemble and protest. However, it is crucial that protesters behave lawfully and not assault others (including verbal assault directed at an individual), vandalize ...

District 10 Update: September 5, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  While on vacation, I watched friends and family share photos and stories as they proudly and excitedly sent their children off to their first day of school, only to be stirred and heartbroken by the tragic and horrible school shooting in Winder, Georgia. I closely followed the news about the rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi , an Israeli Bedouin, which brought a glimmer of relief and hope for all of the remaining Hamas hostages in Gaza. But that hope was quickly shattered by the recovery of six Jewish Israeli hostages , including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who served as an icon of hope in the darkness. The recent execution of these hostages by their Hamas captors is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism -- not only to Israel, but to peace around the world, and even here at home. I'm grateful to our County Executive and other local officials for honoring Hersh by ordering their flags be flown at hal...
