Dear Friends and Neighbors, While on vacation, I watched friends and family share photos and stories as they proudly and excitedly sent their children off to their first day of school, only to be stirred and heartbroken by the tragic and horrible school shooting in Winder, Georgia. I closely followed the news about the rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi, an Israeli Bedouin, which brought a glimmer of relief and hope for all of the remaining Hamas hostages in Gaza. But that hope was quickly shattered by the recovery of six Jewish Israeli hostages, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who served as an icon of hope in the darkness. The recent execution of these hostages by their Hamas captors is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism -- not only to Israel, but to peace around the world, and even here at home. I'm grateful to our County Executive and other local officials for honoring Hersh by ordering their flags be flown at half-staff. These gestures reflect our shared commitment to standing against terrorism. As we approach the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, it's a moment to reflect on the unity that emerged after that tragedy and recognize the importance of standing together against terrorism, hate, and violence. Today, hate and violence are on the rise. We continue to see it right here in Westchester, as well as nearby. It is imperative that we do not allow hate and violence to become the norm. If you have missed any of my prior eNewsletters, you can see them all at my blog site. For more news and updates on upcoming events, please see my weekly update below. Sincerely,
