District 10 Update: January 9, 2025

On Monday, January 6th, the Westchester County Board of Legislators unanimously voted to appoint Deputy County Executive Kenneth W. Jenkins as the County Executive until a Special Election is held on February 11, 2025.

Jenkins succeeds Acting County Executive Richard G. Wishnie, who was designated to the transitional role by Board Chairman Vedat Gashi immediately after Latimer officially stepped down on January 2, 2025.  Jenkins, who has served as Deputy County Executive since 2018 and Board Chair from 2010-2014, has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant with a clear vision for the future of Westchester.

In his role, Jenkins will ensure the County remains on a positive trajectory, maintaining a focus on improving the lives of all Westchester residents while fostering collaboration with local governments and businesses. Jenkins brings over 18 years of experience within Westchester County government, having previously served as both Deputy County Executive and a member of the County Board. His leadership has helped the County achieve significant milestones, including tax cuts, infrastructure improvements, and enhanced protections for our environment and residents.

The public will vote on February 11, 2025 to elect a County Executive to serve the remainder of Congressman George Latimer's term through December 2025. Please mark your calendars and make your voice heard at this special election.

Affordable Housing in Westchester County

Westchester County continues to prioritize creating opportunities for affordable housing across the region. On Tuesday, County Executive Kenneth W. Jenkins, joined by members of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, signed a landmark Land Acquisition Act allocating $10,000,000 to purchase property at 99 Church Street and 6 Cottage Place in White Plains. This investment will enable the construction of 108 affordable homeownership units for first-time buyers, along with 89 parking spaces. As the first legislation signed under Jenkins' administration, this initiative underscores the County's commitment to expanding fair housing opportunities.

Meanwhile, Hidden Meadow, a new affordable development in Somers near Route 6, is now accepting applications for townhouses and apartments. The development features eight three-bedroom townhomes for purchase. Prospective purchasers for the townhomes need to be below 80% of AMI. Sale price for each is estimated at $275,000. Each townhouse also holds a one-bedroom rental unit. Rent for the eight one-bedroom apartments is set at $1,389/month. Apartments are open to 1-2 person households at 60% AMI. The deadline for both townhome and apartment opportunities is January 27, 2025 and the lotteries will determine the order in which applications are reviewed. Together, these initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to expanding affordable housing options for residents throughout Westchester County. 

Richard G. Wishnie Appointed Westchester Deputy County Executive

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins has appointed Richard G. Wishnie as Deputy County Executive. Wishnie brings a storied legacy of public service, including his recent roles as Acting County Executive and Westchester County Commissioner of Emergency Services, as well as decades of leadership in Westchester County.

Wishnie was elected to the Westchester County Board of Legislators in 1993, where he served six distinguished terms representing the Town of Ossining, the Villages of Briarcliff Manor, Ossining, and Croton-on-Hudson, as well as portions of the Town of Cortlandt. As Vice Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, he championed fiscal responsibility while securing critical funding for public safety, community health, and educational initiatives. Westchester County Receives AAA Rating from S&P Global

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This week, I attended the NYSAC conference, where my colleague Ben Boykin was installed as president. One session, "Conflict to Conversation: Must Disagreement Be Disagreeable?" left a lasting impression on me. District 10 Update: August 29, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This past weekend, I brought my youngest son back to SUNY Stony Brook University to begin his sophomore year. Like many parents, I felt the bittersweet mix of love and pride as he left the nest to venture into adulthood. This year, however, I found myself reflecting on the end of his last semester. While our son was fortunate enough not to be significantly impacted by the small but loud protests that took place at his school, some parents were not so lucky, as college students from District 10, Westchester County, and around the world were harassed, intimidated, or blocked from accessing their dorms, classrooms, and other school buildings due to disruptive actions by protestors. I deeply cherish our Constitutional First Amendment and the rights it provides for people to peacefully assemble and protest. District 10 Update: September 5, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  While on vacation, I watched friends and family share photos and stories as they proudly and excitedly sent their children off to their first day of school, only to be stirred and heartbroken by the tragic and horrible school shooting in Winder, Georgia. I closely followed the news about the rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi , an Israeli Bedouin, which brought a glimmer of relief and hope for all of the remaining Hamas hostages in Gaza. But that hope was quickly shattered by the recovery of six Jewish Israeli hostages , including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who served as an icon of hope in the darkness. The recent execution of these hostages by their Hamas captors is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism -- not only to Israel, but to peace around the world, and even here at home.
