District 10 Update: January 24, 2025

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

One of the greatest privileges of representing District 10 is being part of a community where we share, celebrate, and participate in each other's diverse experiences. Last week, I had the honor of attending interfaith and secular events at Temple Israel of New Rochelle, Shiloh Baptist Church, the Reformed Church of Bronxville, St. Catherine's AME Church, and the JCC to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These gatherings highlighted his enduring dream of unity and service, reminding us how much stronger we are when we come together across different traditions and perspectives.

In the same spirit of collaboration and unity, I'm proud to share that my Digital Deception bill has advanced through committee and will go to the floor next month. The bill was a collaboration between my staff, the Law Department, and the District Attorney's Office, and it was signed onto by all 17 Legislators in a show of unanimous bipartisan support. This legislation seeks to protect our most vulnerable residents—especially seniors and youth—from the misuse of emerging technologies like AI. Even in today's polarized world, this effort demonstrates that we can still find common ground, respect each other's perspectives, and work together to address meaningful challenges.

Let's continue to honor Dr. King's vision by building a future rooted in unity, service, and collaboration.

Sincerely,

Economic Strength and Fiscal Responsibility

Westchester County Board of Legislators announcement stating that Westchester is the only county in New York awarded S&P Global's highest bond rating of AAA.

This month, Westchester County achieved significant recognition for its fiscal strength and financial management. Ours became the only county in New York State to be awarded S&P Global's highest bond rating of AAA. On the same day, Fitch reaffirmed the County's AAA credit rating—both reflecting the County's robust economy, strategic budgeting, and strong financial reserves.

Moody's Investors Service also upgraded the County's financial outlook from stable to positive in January while affirming its Aa1 issuer and debt ratings. These ratings highlight the County's commitment to fiscal responsibility and its ability to continue investing in community programs and infrastructure without compromising financial stability. This strong financial foundation positions Westchester for continued economic growth and secure future investments.

Reflecting on the Past, Committing to a Better Future

Westchester County Board of Legislators tribute for International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, featuring a lit candle against a background of blurred glowing lights.

On January 27th, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honor the memory of the six million Jewish men, women, and children, along with countless others, who lost their lives during the Holocaust. This year's theme, "For a Better Future," calls on us to learn from history and commit to standing against hatred, prejudice, and injustice in all forms. By fostering understanding, compassion, and unity, we ensure that the lessons of the past guide us toward a more inclusive and equitable world. Let us take this day to reflect, educate, and renew our pledge to build a future rooted in dignity and respect for all. Together, we can create a better tomorrow.

District 10 Update: September 13, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This week, I attended the NYSAC conference, where my colleague Ben Boykin was installed as president. One session, "Conflict to Conversation: Must Disagreement Be Disagreeable?" left a lasting impression on me. The speaker made a powerful point: "There is no freedom of speech without a concurrent need to listen." As a country, we pride ourselves on free expression, but true progress begins when we listen. If no one is listening, our words lose value, and we go unheard and unresolved. Upon returning, I was deeply moved by the story of a front-line survivor from the October 7 tragedy, whose experience of trying to save others while fearing for her own life reminded me in some ways of the countless stories of heroism from 9/11. As I then commemorated 9/11 in Eastchester, New Rochelle, and at the Kensico Dam, I realized that our younge...

District 10 Update: August 29, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This past weekend, I brought my youngest son back to SUNY Stony Brook University to begin his sophomore year. Like many parents, I felt the bittersweet mix of love and pride as he left the nest to venture into adulthood. This year, however, I found myself reflecting on the end of his last semester. While our son was fortunate enough not to be significantly impacted by the small but loud protests that took place at his school, some parents were not so lucky, as college students from District 10, Westchester County, and around the world were harassed, intimidated, or blocked from accessing their dorms, classrooms, and other school buildings due to disruptive actions by protestors. I deeply cherish our Constitutional First Amendment and the rights it provides for people to peacefully assemble and protest. However, it is crucial that protesters behave lawfully and not assault others (including verbal assault directed at an individual), vandalize ...

District 10 Update: September 5, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  While on vacation, I watched friends and family share photos and stories as they proudly and excitedly sent their children off to their first day of school, only to be stirred and heartbroken by the tragic and horrible school shooting in Winder, Georgia. I closely followed the news about the rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi , an Israeli Bedouin, which brought a glimmer of relief and hope for all of the remaining Hamas hostages in Gaza. But that hope was quickly shattered by the recovery of six Jewish Israeli hostages , including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who served as an icon of hope in the darkness. The recent execution of these hostages by their Hamas captors is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism -- not only to Israel, but to peace around the world, and even here at home. I'm grateful to our County Executive and other local officials for honoring Hersh by ordering their flags be flown at hal...
