Dear Friends and Neighbors, We are being reminded that rights and protections can never be taken for granted. Recently, we have seen protections that we assumed were part of our long, painful national march toward freedom and equality rolled back or weakened. Roe v. Wade, which stood for nearly fifty years, was overturned. The Voting Rights Act has been effectively undermined, reducing federal oversight that protected against discriminatory election practices for decades. Rolling back other hard-earned rights is being openly discussed, including contraception, same-sex marriage, birthright citizenship, and the role of federal agencies in enforcing anti-discrimination laws.
