District 10 Update: May 17, 2024

This week, I attended a flurry of events, including the New Rochelle Public Library Gala, the Firefighters Local 916 annual dinner, the Rotary's Celebration of the Longest Married Couple in Eastchester, the Care Coalition's Annual Vigil, a crucial Westchester County Cybersecurity Exercise, the grand opening of a Fitness and Training Center on North Avenue, and the heart-wrenching dedication of Westchester's October 7th Memorial. Additionally, I moved my youngest son back home from college after successfully completing his first academic year.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Caucus of the Westchester County Board of Legislators released a statement regarding recent litigation on women's rights and gender-based discrimination, which may be on the ballot in November.

Although I was not on the County Board of Legislators when the Clinic Access Law was passed, I am proud that we live in a county that diligently protects the First Amendment rights of protestors while also ensuring the rights of individuals to access healthcare and health education without fearing harm, harassment, or restriction.

As I drove my son home, I reflected on the disparity between those who champion freedom for women and freedom of speech, yet selectively advocate for freedom for other citizens, especially our youth. College kids simply want to attend classes, enjoy their college experience, and celebrate their traditions and heritage.

Let's work together to ensure we respect the freedoms of others even while exercising our own.

Please check out my weekly update below for more news and events.

Sincerely,
Judah Holstein

Estimados Amigos y Vecinos,

Atentamente,
Judah Holstein signature

District 10 Update: September 13, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This week, I attended the NYSAC conference, where my colleague Ben Boykin was installed as president. One session, "Conflict to Conversation: Must Disagreement Be Disagreeable?" left a lasting impression on me. The speaker made a powerful point: "There is no freedom of speech without a concurrent need to listen." As a country, we pride ourselves on free expression, but true progress begins when we listen. If no one is listening, our words lose value, and we go unheard and unresolved. Upon returning, I was deeply moved by the story of a front-line survivor from the October 7 tragedy, whose experience of trying to save others while fearing for her own life reminded me in some ways of the countless stories of heroism from 9/11. As I then commemorated 9/11 in Eastchester, New Rochelle, and at the Kensico Dam, I realized that our younge...

District 10 Update: August 29, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This past weekend, I brought my youngest son back to SUNY Stony Brook University to begin his sophomore year. Like many parents, I felt the bittersweet mix of love and pride as he left the nest to venture into adulthood. This year, however, I found myself reflecting on the end of his last semester. While our son was fortunate enough not to be significantly impacted by the small but loud protests that took place at his school, some parents were not so lucky, as college students from District 10, Westchester County, and around the world were harassed, intimidated, or blocked from accessing their dorms, classrooms, and other school buildings due to disruptive actions by protestors. I deeply cherish our Constitutional First Amendment and the rights it provides for people to peacefully assemble and protest. However, it is crucial that protesters behave lawfully and not assault others (including verbal assault directed at an individual), vandalize ...

District 10 Update: September 5, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  While on vacation, I watched friends and family share photos and stories as they proudly and excitedly sent their children off to their first day of school, only to be stirred and heartbroken by the tragic and horrible school shooting in Winder, Georgia. I closely followed the news about the rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi , an Israeli Bedouin, which brought a glimmer of relief and hope for all of the remaining Hamas hostages in Gaza. But that hope was quickly shattered by the recovery of six Jewish Israeli hostages , including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who served as an icon of hope in the darkness. The recent execution of these hostages by their Hamas captors is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism -- not only to Israel, but to peace around the world, and even here at home. I'm grateful to our County Executive and other local officials for honoring Hersh by ordering their flags be flown at hal...
