District 10 Update: May 23, 2024

This Monday, the Westchester County Board of Legislators commemorated Jewish-American Heritage Month with a special ceremony. We recognized the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center (HHREC) and honored Jill Ratner, M.D., a distinguished healthcare advocate and humanitarian.

I am deeply honored to have presented a proclamation to the HHREC during our observance. The dedication of HHREC in preserving the memory of the Holocaust and promoting human rights education in our community is truly inspiring. Their commitment to combating hate and fostering tolerance, dignity, and compassion is crucial, especially in times when these values can be overshadowed by individual expression. This event was a poignant reminder of the principles we all should uphold—whether we are students, teachers, parents, or neighbors. I encourage you to watch the video to experience the ceremony and absorb its important message.

Help Protect Voting Rights!
Join the Election Day Workforce!

The Westchester County Board of Elections relies on an election-day workforce of more than 4,000 registered Westchester voters. Ideally, each polling place has an equal number of workers representing the Democratic and Republican parties to provide the front-line checks-and-balances that protect voting rights. These workers are your neighbors; their service is vital to fair elections

There are two more countywide elections in 2024 – a Primary on June 25th and a General on November 5th and hundreds of trained poll workers are still needed. True, it is a long day: set-up begins at 5 AM and the day ends about 30 minutes after the polls close at 9 PM. However, you would be joining your neighbors in performing an invaluable civic duty. Won't you, or a member of your family, or a friend, consider providing this essential service to our democracy?

The Board provides training on-line and in-person and pay stipends of $25 for each training and $350 for each Election Day. Help us protect the vote!

Queridos amigos y vecinos:

¿Qué pasaría si fueras a votar y no hubiera nadie allí?

District 10 Update: September 13, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This week, I attended the NYSAC conference, where my colleague Ben Boykin was installed as president. One session, "Conflict to Conversation: Must Disagreement Be Disagreeable?" left a lasting impression on me. The speaker made a powerful point: "There is no freedom of speech without a concurrent need to listen." As a country, we pride ourselves on free expression, but true progress begins when we listen. If no one is listening, our words lose value, and we go unheard and unresolved. Upon returning, I was deeply moved by the story of a front-line survivor from the October 7 tragedy, whose experience of trying to save others while fearing for her own life reminded me in some ways of the countless stories of heroism from 9/11. As I then commemorated 9/11 in Eastchester, New Rochelle, and at the Kensico Dam, I realized that our younge...

District 10 Update: August 29, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This past weekend, I brought my youngest son back to SUNY Stony Brook University to begin his sophomore year. Like many parents, I felt the bittersweet mix of love and pride as he left the nest to venture into adulthood. This year, however, I found myself reflecting on the end of his last semester. While our son was fortunate enough not to be significantly impacted by the small but loud protests that took place at his school, some parents were not so lucky, as college students from District 10, Westchester County, and around the world were harassed, intimidated, or blocked from accessing their dorms, classrooms, and other school buildings due to disruptive actions by protestors. I deeply cherish our Constitutional First Amendment and the rights it provides for people to peacefully assemble and protest. However, it is crucial that protesters behave lawfully and not assault others (including verbal assault directed at an individual), vandalize ...

District 10 Update: September 5, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  While on vacation, I watched friends and family share photos and stories as they proudly and excitedly sent their children off to their first day of school, only to be stirred and heartbroken by the tragic and horrible school shooting in Winder, Georgia. I closely followed the news about the rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi , an Israeli Bedouin, which brought a glimmer of relief and hope for all of the remaining Hamas hostages in Gaza. But that hope was quickly shattered by the recovery of six Jewish Israeli hostages , including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who served as an icon of hope in the darkness. The recent execution of these hostages by their Hamas captors is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism -- not only to Israel, but to peace around the world, and even here at home. I'm grateful to our County Executive and other local officials for honoring Hersh by ordering their flags be flown at hal...
