District 10 Update: July 12, 2024

I hope everyone had a fantastic Independence Day!

While we celebrate our freedom on July 4th, it's fascinating to remember that our journey to nationhood actually spanned several key days in 1776. The Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, but it took two more days to finalize the Declaration of Independence for public sharing. Without the internet or eNewsletters, news spread more slowly, and it wasn't until July 8 that the first public reading took place in what is now Independence Square in Philadelphia. On July 11, 1776, Judge John Thomas read the Declaration in White Plains, marking the birth of the State of New York. I had the pleasure of celebrating this historic moment with a reenactment at our own slice of history—the Ward House, at the intersection of Eastchester, Tuckahoe, and Bronxville.

With Independence Day behind us and summer in full swing, there are plenty of great concerts and events to enjoy. I've listed some below. This is also a time for neighbors and friends and block parties. My office has been working hard to stay connected with our local Neighborhood Associations and Community Groups, but we need updated information. If your group is hosting a summer event like a barbecue or block party, or if you just want to make sure we have your latest details, please reach out to my office at this email address. We would love the opportunity to get to know you and your community better and hear any thoughts, concerns, or questions you may have.

In the meantime, please check out my weekly update below.

Sincerely,

Celebrating Plastic Free July!

https://westchesterlegislators.com/images/enews/2024/jul/plastic-free-july.png

As part of a Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Series, the Board of Legislators Committees on Parks & Environment and Public Works & Transportation and the Sub-Committee on Health convened on Tuesday to address the impact of plastics on our health and environment. In previous efforts, the Board has successfully passed the Upon Request legislation, which requires consumers to specifically ask for plastic utensils when getting carryout. This step has significantly reduced unnecessary plastic waste. You can watch the recording of the meeting here.

Visit the American Academy of Pediatrics website with helpful tips on environmental hazards including PFAS and Plastic Additives. More tips to come all month long.

Let's keep working together towards a sustainable future!

Queridos amigos y vecinos,

He enumerado algunos a continuación.

Atentamente,

¡Celebrando Julio Sin Plástico!

https://westchesterlegislators.com/images/enews/2024/jul/plastic-free-july.png

District 10 Update: September 13, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This week, I attended the NYSAC conference, where my colleague Ben Boykin was installed as president. One session, "Conflict to Conversation: Must Disagreement Be Disagreeable?" left a lasting impression on me. The speaker made a powerful point: "There is no freedom of speech without a concurrent need to listen." As a country, we pride ourselves on free expression, but true progress begins when we listen. If no one is listening, our words lose value, and we go unheard and unresolved. Upon returning, I was deeply moved by the story of a front-line survivor from the October 7 tragedy, whose experience of trying to save others while fearing for her own life reminded me in some ways of the countless stories of heroism from 9/11. As I then commemorated 9/11 in Eastchester, New Rochelle, and at the Kensico Dam, I realized that our younge...

District 10 Update: August 29, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  This past weekend, I brought my youngest son back to SUNY Stony Brook University to begin his sophomore year. Like many parents, I felt the bittersweet mix of love and pride as he left the nest to venture into adulthood. This year, however, I found myself reflecting on the end of his last semester. While our son was fortunate enough not to be significantly impacted by the small but loud protests that took place at his school, some parents were not so lucky, as college students from District 10, Westchester County, and around the world were harassed, intimidated, or blocked from accessing their dorms, classrooms, and other school buildings due to disruptive actions by protestors. I deeply cherish our Constitutional First Amendment and the rights it provides for people to peacefully assemble and protest. However, it is crucial that protesters behave lawfully and not assault others (including verbal assault directed at an individual), vandalize ...

District 10 Update: September 5, 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,  While on vacation, I watched friends and family share photos and stories as they proudly and excitedly sent their children off to their first day of school, only to be stirred and heartbroken by the tragic and horrible school shooting in Winder, Georgia. I closely followed the news about the rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi , an Israeli Bedouin, which brought a glimmer of relief and hope for all of the remaining Hamas hostages in Gaza. But that hope was quickly shattered by the recovery of six Jewish Israeli hostages , including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who served as an icon of hope in the darkness. The recent execution of these hostages by their Hamas captors is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism -- not only to Israel, but to peace around the world, and even here at home. I'm grateful to our County Executive and other local officials for honoring Hersh by ordering their flags be flown at hal...
